2022 Summer Newsletter

Hurricane Season is Here. Are You Ready?

Atlantic Hurricane Season officially began on June 1st, and while we have been fortunate so far, we must be prepared for future storms. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predicts between 14 and 21 named storms this season. Of those storms, six to ten are expected to reach hurricane status, with three to six hurricanes being Category 3 or higher.

It has been five years since our last hurricane (Harvey, Category 4), which unfortunately increases our risk for another major storm. Brazoria County's most active months for hurricanes are August and September, but we have seen major hurricanes hit the Texas Gulf Coast in October. Officially, Hurricane Season ends November 30th.

Recovery to Resiliency

MiA has been active in post-disaster (Recovery) work since Hurricane Harvey, but we've noticed something is missing: pre-disaster (Resiliency) work. Recovery work receives national media coverage, global funding, and immeasurable support because of the disaster's emotionally triggering effect on the outside world– but there's no trigger for Resiliency. Despite its significance, Resiliency efforts evoke almost no sympathy or compassion.

But why should people care about Resiliency? Well, the most troubling thing about disasters is that they're opportunistic. They look for a bit of minor damage or a conveniently placed tree limb, and that's where all their strength seems to go. The only way to combat these targeted attacks is to be proactive. That is what makes Resiliency so important.

Why spend $20,000 to replace a roof after a storm when you could spend $5,000 to repair its most vulnerable pieces? Why not spend $500 to have an old tree branch safely removed before it falls on your home? These near-rhetorical questions inspired MiA to launch our Resiliency Program– a program explicitly designed to help those at high risk for future storm damage. Check out our website for information on MiA's Resiliency Program and how you can help yourself, your family, and your neighbors become proactive and resilient.

Getting Ready for Trivia Night

Mosaic in Action is preparing to host our inaugural Charity Trivia Night fundraiser at Good Vibes Coastal Kitchen in Pearland. We are twelve days out from the event, and our team could not be more excited. Participants are encouraged to join us for Happy Hour starting at 5 PM to learn more about our mission, browse our silent auction items, and meet their competition.

For those attending, here is a sneak peek at the main rounds for Wednesday: General Knowledge, Famous Explorers, One-Word Movie Titles, Celebrity Mugshot Picture Round, Cartoon Villains, In Vino Veritas, and The Human Body. The trivia questions are family-friendly, so children are welcome. The competition will be hosted by our Co-Founders, Jim Liberatore and Debbie Allensworth. There will be prizes for the first, second, and third place teams, so be sure to bring your A-game.

As of today, we have six teams officially signed up with six spots remaining. Teams are not allowed to have more than four people per team. We would like to thank everyone who made our first Trivia Night a huge success– we couldn't have done it without you. See you all July 13th!

Meet Our Intern: Alex Kopetz

Alex Kopetz has been volunteering with Mosaic in Action since we formed in 2016. He will be working with our team for the summer before he returns to Chicago, Illinois for his sophomore year at Loyola University.

Officially, Alex is our Case Management Intern, but he assists all of our team both in the field and in the office. He is already an incredible asset to the team and we are lucky to have him!
